Various Choices of Molds for Candle Making

Candle making is a hobby that has spawned many options. Candles of different sizes and shapes can be made at home with great ease. What makes the task easy is the availability of different kinds of candle making molds, the variety of options being just as many as the number of candles and their varied shapes and sizes. Candle making is immensely popular and satisfying. People are always buying candles to decorate their homes and this makes it a reason to take up the hobby.

Candles are made by pouring wax into molds and then letting it cool. This molten wax assumes the shape of the mold when it cools. Candle molds come in various shapes and sizes. It also comes in various materials that determine the variety in sizes .Aluminum is the least expensive and commonly used type of mold for making pillar candles. It is very popular and gives a smooth finished candle without leaving any seams that make the candle look ragged. Aluminum molds are very popular with candle makers because they are easy to clean as well. The left over wax can be easily heated away. Just put them upside in an oven and heat. Around 150 degrees the wax melts and collects on the baking sheet that you place underneath. Though they are inexpensive, they are restrictive as they are not flexible. This limits candle shapes. Aluminum molds also require the use of a releasing agent to get the candle out of the mold.

Rubber molds which come in materials made of polyurethane, silicone, and latex, are flexible and can be used for making candles of different shapes. Polyurethane molds are flexible but their stretching is not perfect. Compared to silicon molds, they are cheaper. Pillar type candles are often made with these molds. Because they do not stretch properly, you need a releasing agent to get the candle out of the mold. The material also has a strong unpleasant odor which sticks to the candles as well. Silicon molds are most expensive type of molds. They result in the best and the finest quality candles. They are stretchable, so getting candles out is easy and does not require a releasing agent. Latex molds were popular earlier but with advances in other types of materials they are not frequently used now. However, latex molds can be made at home itself. By just painting coats of latex on any structure of desired shape, the mold can be made. A lot of latex is required but the scope of getting any desired shape still makes it an attractive option.

The cheapest of the lot are plastic molds. Though they are cheap, they are not used often as they are brittle and do not have a long lifespan. But they are easy to clean, which makes them a favorite among beginner candle makers. To clean them, all you need is some warm water and soap. Before using them again, make sure they are completely dry as any remaining water will produce bubbles in the candle. These molds are good for beginners but if you want to take your skills and your business to a higher level, molds of other materials are required.
